Doctors’ Guild Awards Golden Scalpel Prizes

Along with the steaming debate over medical errors, Bulgarian doctors were almost declared public enemy № 1. And the truth is that most of the people from guild are working in difficult conditions and count on outdated equipment. Yet some of the medics are great professionals. Moreover, some of their professional successes in 2011 can even showcase the local sector’s achievement before the world. In local hospitals unique operations were carried out in the fields of microsurgery, cardiology, treatment of tumours and gynaecology. Ill people who otherwise would be considered gone were saved, so one may say that many doctors do wonders, even if it is not Christmas.

Miracle is the right word for the unique operation carried out by Professor Vladimir Danoff and his team at St. Anna Hospital. After a bitter battle lasting for five hours and a half, the cardiac surgeons

removed a huge tumour from the heart ofa patient, who all had previously thought of as lost.

Several other patients were brought back from the underworld due to the enormous expertise of Bulgarian doctors.

With only a computer navigation doctors at Tokuda hospital removed a malignant tumor in the head of a 35-year-old woman from Varna. The entity was located on an inaccessible place and the team led by Dr. Slavchev operated without being able to see it, and performed an operation which so far has taken place only in German and French hospitals. A three-dimensional computer projection with maximum accuracy showed exactly where to cut and remove the tumour.

Mothers and children were saved from even more critical situations without much media noise. Parents of 8-year-old Alex from Galabovo are very thankful to the University Hospital in Stara Zagora. The boy fell on glass, which almost fatally injured his left hand. The child was admitted to hospital with a large loss of blood and severed torn arteries, muscles and nerves with a real risk of the hand having to be amputated. After 6-hour operation the team of surgeons led by Dr. Christo Zapryanov managed to re-implant it limb and restore his blood circulation.

Professor Grigor Gorchev was chosen to be № 1 Doctor in Bulgaria. The Rector of Medical University in Pleven, Professor Grigor Gorchev, was awarded the Physician of the Year by the Professional Association. He is the only certified surgeon in Southeast Europe, operating Da Vinci the robot while in the same time it was he who created a University Telecommunications Endoscopy Centre.

General Stoyan Tonev received the award for most successfully developing hospital – Military Academy. The best district hospital in 2011 was in Targovishte, while the municipal best award went to Teteven.

Onkological centre in Veliko Tarnovo was said to be offering the best care for patients. A the chairman of the health committee Desislava Atanasova, Professor Milan Milanov and Prof. Todor Chernev took the guild’s award for best protectors of interests of doctors.

The award for best medical education was shared by the rectors of Medical University in Sofia and Varna Prof. Georgi Mitev and Professor Aneliya Klisarova.

An imaging diagnostics company was awarded for preparing the first rules of good practice.
