With the launch of the new sections of the subway in Sofia there will be serious changes in the routes of many bus lines. New lines to lead passengers directly to subway stations are also planned to be launched. The idea of the municipality is to empower people of the capital to use the subway to significantly reduce road traffic. Calculations of the executive director of Metropolitan Sofia, Stoyan Bratoev, show that after putting the second metro line in operation the subway trains will handle at least 350,000 people per day, which will reduce congestion in the city centre by about 30 percent.
By the end of January the Sofia Municipal Council will consider the report containing proposals for new bus routes. Their servicing, however, may only begin in the autumn, when it is expected all the new sections of the subway to be operational. Plans are to open 12 new routes that will be services by smaller vehicles, all starting with number 500.
Line № 501 for example will ride from Vrabnitsa in Nadezhda district will reach the Sofia North station. Number 502 will travel from Svoboda district through different parts of the Nadezhda district to reach Orlandovtsi bus station.
From Lyulin 1 along the boulevards Queen Joanna, Vladigerov, J. Nehru street, Indira Gandhi, Gen.. Vl. Dinchev Street, Louis Pasteur Street, Tarnovo Street, and Vladigerov Blvd to Metro Station Slivnitsa is the scheduled route of bus No 503. It will also stop at the metro station Lyulin. From the third subregion of the third largest metropolitan complex will also start the busline 504. It will pass between the boulevards Dobrinova Skala, Queen Joanna, Vladigerov and R. Daskalov.
Line 505 will connect Ovcha Kupel district with the two metro stations Vardar and K. Velichkov and the buses will run through the Krasna Polyana quarter. Number 506 will travel from residential district Levski G to Vassil Levski stadium, and № 507 – from the Student City to the bus station Geo Milev and will pass near to the metro station in Musagenica and the Aviation square to the new sports hall. Another line 511, will serve Student City. It will probably replace bus 294.
