Bulgaria To Ask for Bigger Regional Development Budget

Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova

In the next phase of the Regional Development Operational Programme our ambitions are to receive funding of 4 billion levs. We are going to apply for a doubling of the funds under the scheme Support for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of secondary and tertiary roads in the amount of 1 billion levs. This was stated by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova at the signing ceremony of three new contracts under the scheme, which took place on December 18 (Tuesday).

Contracts are part of the investment programme of the Road Infrastructure Agency under the respective operational program. The three sections that receive funding are Dragomirovo to Tsarevets; Ruse – Opaka and from the border of the regional road directorate of Haskovo to the village of Rose. With the overall allocation of 29 million levs 46.5 km of road will be repaired.

So far there are 44 contracts for the rehabilitation of secondary and tertiary roads, of which 11 were completed successfully, and 33 will be ready next year. The work on the last three is expected to kick off in the spring or summer, after completing all the tenders. Minister Pavlova added that the result is doubled compared to initial plans, because at the beginning of the period a road network of 400 kilometres was estimated to be repaired, and in fact over 800 km will be rehabilitated.

Mr. Lazar Lazarov, who is Chairman of the Board of the Road Infrastructure Agency says that because of the Operational Programme Regional Development roads that have been left unrepaired in the past 40 to 50 years are now being reconstructed.
