St. Nicholas’ Day is coming again. One more time we’ll stuff the carp. We’ll again put a scale in the wallet for health, for tail wind and for financial luck. As we do it every year, we’ll again pay tribute to the white-bearded saint.
Just because the legend says that St. Nicholas is not only a defender of the fishermen and the seafarers, but is also a patron of the bankers. Before being canonized a saint he was a usurer who used to help the underprivileged and poor by handing out his fortune. And at the same time kept in secrecy where the benefactions came from.
Waiting with bated breath for the patron saint’s day the Banker weekly newspaper also throws over a bridge towards the New Year and directs a challenge to the bankers: Who will be the first amongst equals to match with him (or her) next year?
He will be chosen as usual after a serious analysis of fair criteria.
